Yes! We HAVE Always Been This Cool!
Today, Blast from the Past happens here... MORBY STYLE.
First up, Ginger lookin' like a boss. Val lookin' like a veg (etable.)
Time for an afternoon of rollerblading with Uncle Ken. See? G's skillz with a pair of rollerblades go way back. My skillz with a dorky pink helmet ALSO have a history. (AND: the t-shirt tucked into the cotton shorts? Seriously- looking good, Morby.) (ALTHOUGH: Ginger's black shortalls are kind of giving me a run for my money.) (Let's be honest.) (On second look, no. No one looks worse than Val here.)
Sorry this picture is a little cut off, but it had to be shared. This was our Christmas card circa 1999, I believe. I remember selecting our clothes for the artistic comment of simplicity converging on to more complex patterns, in the form of solids followed by stripes followed by plaid. That's just the sort of intentional, creative statement my family is famous for making!*
Just after Ginger's performance in the Homecoming musical "Guys and Dolls" in 2003. This is back when my hair wanted to be Chloe Sullivan's hair. (It didn't really work.) It was all my hair's idea! On the right is Cousin Shanni, not a long-lost third Morby sister. So I'm sorry, but no, this blog is not about to get more interesting with the addition of another sister. It's still just us.
*Not true but at all.

Subterfuge
I was not made for lying. Or deception. Or secret-keeping. Well, nobody was. (Except maybe for Crissy up there.) But me especially? Not so much.
David contacted me two weeks ago with the idea of coming to Texas to surprise Ginger and propose to her here. (I’ll let her be the one to give you the full story, don’t worry!) It was the morning I was leaving for SXSW. It’s all that was on my mind during that four and a half hour drive down to Austin. I was particularly perky that morning, and why not? Ginger! David! Surprise engagement! Grins all around!
But. This is when the lying had to start. I somehow had to keep my mouth shut during a five-day trip with co-workers and friends. I had to go out into the hotel hallway to make a purposely vague phone call, and checked my phone constantly for new texts or emails from David, as more and more news came in for what his trip was going to look like.
I also had to endure the hardest thing so far: a very long phone call with Ginger, listening to her talk about her relationship, when she thought the proposal might possibly come, and find a way to be my normal self of question-asking and hmmm-ing and somehow not telling her IT’S GOING TO HAPPEN WHILE YOU’RE IN TEXAS! IN TWO WEEKS! HE’S GOING TO SURPRISE YOU GAAAAAH!
After that weekend I had to work hard to do everything I could to keep this secret from somehow getting out. And that's when the lying really took off. SO! Apologies to you if you were one of the people whose face I lied directly into. Annie, for sure, who I spent an entire weekend with and wanted nothing more than to just let it all out and jump on the hotel beds in excitement with over the whole thing! Stacy, my co-worker pal, who asked very innocent questions about things I was doing and received a handful of mushy falsehoods in return. And especially my own BROTHER, who asked if I thought there might be a chance that she'd fly in and surprise US by already having a ring, and I had to just vaguely say something like "I don't thiiiiiiink so.... Oh look! A bird!"
The hardest person to lie to though was, of course, Ginger. Particularly once she was in Tyler, enjoying the backyard weather with my parents and I, as I told her I had to “go back to work” and avoid her gaze as she grilled me about “DO THEY KNOW YOUR FAMILY’S IN TOWN?!?” and “WHY DO YOU HAVE TO GO IN?” and I mumbled something about my boss and his kids and okay bye.
Because.
I was on my way to meet up with Him*. To show him possible proposal spots. (PS—He is so awesome, because I took him to my favorite place first and he simply high-fived me and said he didn’t need to see anywhere else. Brother-in-law WIN!) We talked about Ginger, and how we both say WIN, and about how I had the hardest job, because of all the LYING! I mean really. All he had to do was ask her a question!
Me? I had to lie to her face again on Sunday morning and tell her that Mom and Grandma went over here, let’s go meet them! See? This is not strange at all! Here, listen to this great song. Sing along, why dontcha?
And suddenly all of the paranoia, the evasion, the heart-clenched feeling, the worry, the sleepless nights, the lying, and everything else, were all worth it. Because then I left, and five minutes later when I came back, she was sparkling (both in jewelry and demeanor) and bouncing and happier than I’ve ever seen her.
More so than when we got a trampoline that one Christmas even.
*David. Not the Lord. (Though I’m sure He was there too.)

God help the Mister.

Sisters, sisters
There were never such devoted sisters,
Never had to have a chaperone, No sir,
I'm here to keep my eye on her
Caring, sharing
Every little thing that we are wearing
When a certain gentleman arrived from Rome
All kinds of weather, we stick together
The same in the rain and sun
Two different faces, but in tight places
We think and we act as one
Those who have seen us
Many men have tried to split us up,
And Lord help the sister, who comes between me and my man.
Sisters, Sisters by Irving Berlin.
Val and I grew up loving "White Christmas" and we've always had a bit of a bug for musicals - surprise! This song especially makes me laugh because of our own personal history as sisters.
1. We did in fact dress alike as children, but not out of our own choosing.
4. I will say that we have the ability to make each other laugh than any other individual on the planet. See exhibit B, a g-chat, for details.
me: k i am sending you a new profile pic for you for facebook
Valerie: for me?
me: FOR MEEE. (for you)
me: just quoting myself
Valerie: thass for meeee

Valerie: yeah. sounds about right.
me: is for meee
Valerie: lol wow
me: oh that was funny
Valerie: what would you do without you to make you laugh?
me: true statement... yes I still keep picturing someone looking at your fb pg and saying that
Valerie: lol shut up i didnt mean they would get confused
me: i know it just seemed silly to me
me: :)
Valerie: okay, im headed out catch you later!

Way back when.
When I was a kid I used to walk around and try to act like Sandy from Grease. I dressed in a pair of my mom’s wooden wedge heals that were the navy version of the exact shoes she wears at the end of the movie. I added black spandex pants and a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader jacket and I was set to walk down the hall, throw down a Barbie shoe (in place of a cigarette, of course) and quip, “Tell me about it, stud.”
I invited a handful of girls over for my second grade birthday party to spend the night. We watched Grease. It was one of those awesome moments for my mom when she realized that she didn’t quite remember how mature Grease actually was. I think the piece d’ resistance was when a girl piped up later “I know what sex is.” Can’t you just picture my mom’s eyes bugging out from her head? I know I can.
When we were kids Val and I used to play library and grocery store a lot. For a long time I thought I wanted to get my masters in library science. I think I really just liked those stickers on the backs of the books in the 90’s – the one with the due dates. I would have given my right arm to get to have one of those little contraptions that dispersed the stickers.
Included in our repertoire of fun things to play was the game, Land Before Time. One of us would be Littlefoot and the other would be Cera… and we would butt heads. As in be on all fours and go towards each other from opposite sides of the room. I would pay money to watch that now, but that is not one of the moments captured on our home movies. We do, however, have a home movie of Valerie and I singing, "dancing", and over acting where Val is wearing a pink leotard with Land Before Time characters on the front. This almost makes up for it.
I’ve spent the last ten years dispelling the belief of my parent’s that I was really just a great kid. I was a good kid, just very sneaky. I didn’t do anything illegal, but I just did a lot of lying. I would hide my vitamins behind the TV, shove my carrots in the floor of the playhouse, and drink cokes (which was totally against the rules about 50 weeks out of the year) and then put the empty cans in special hiding places. Why those hiding places did not involve the trashcan I’m not certain. My mom would leave for the grocery store and give us firm instructions on how to use our time. Usually it involved cleaning our rooms, working on homework, or practicing an instrument. We would instead, watch TV. As soon as we heard that garage door open we would bolt around the house looking very busy and very determined to accomplish our tasks. I was a whiz at setting the timer with only 7 or 8 minutes left to practice my piano when she arrived. “Look at me, I’ve been practicing SO hard for 38 minutes.”
With three kids needing to practice multiple instruments throughout the day, we had to resort to practicing at odd times. There was a large chunk of my life where I practiced the piano at 6:15am on the weekdays. I can’t even speak to people before 8:00am, so you can imagine how much I loved that. I figured out a way to practice AND sleep during that time. We had a full keyboard next to one of our pianos (some dads buy cars, my dad likes pianos), and I would record myself running scales, practicing one song, or working on chords, and then I would simply play my work on loop for about half an hour while I laid on the bench. My mom once caught me laying on the bench and playing scales with just my right hand. That went over really well.
All three of us kids have thrown up at the kitchen table. All three of us have thrown up green beans at the kitchen table. Eventually they stopped putting them on our plates. Good move.
I want to try to do some version of all of these things tomorrow, just for fun. Maybe not the green beans, but we’ll see. So, rebellious child you, what did you try to pull on your folks? Do tell.

Proof that the Sarcasm is Genetic
In this first part, I think we are headed to Hot Springs, Arkansas. This would put me at I think 15 years old, meaning Ginger's about 17 and Clay's probably 10. By the way, the song Ginger is listening to in the beginning is (I hope she won't mind me saying) her solo from "Pippin," which she did her senior year of high school. She had probably just gotten the tape and was still learning it at this point. ALSO: a note that Clay and I used to fight. A lot. So...don't be surprised here. Okay, enough explanations! Enjoy riding along with our family...
Aaaand: SCENE
-----------------------
We are listening to the barf band (Beatles).
“Time to take a little from the world! Time to take time! In just no time at all!” sings Ginger, snapping her fingers.
“Valerie, don’t you really like this song?” asks Clay.
I nod. We are listening to “Fish Fry.” Dad is driving. We are going 70 mph. It is 12:47.
“Are we going to Little Rock?” says Clay.
“No.” says Mom. She shows him on the map.
“Everyone should have brought a hat.” Mom says.
“I did.” I say.
“To keep ticks out of our hair.”
“I brought a hat.”
“Yes, we need hats.”
“I have one, see?”
“Oh, good. You have a hat, Valerie!”
Ginger is still singing. It is 12:56.
We are listening to “Judy in Disguise With Glasses.” We go over a bridge.
Ginger is still singing. Clay is reading a “Betty and Veronica” book. It is 1:00.
Ginger is clapping her hands and counting.
“21 counts!” she says triumphantly.
Dad is scratching his neck. Mom has Clay’s quilt on her. Ginger says something that sounds like a dying rat. She says, “Was I being very loud?”
“Sort of,” I say. I am now listening to her song. It’s nice.
Mom is messing with her earring. It is 1:07.
Ginger is pulling the head phone cord. I am choking.
She smiles. “Sorry.”
Clay’s leg is on top of his other one. His head is sideways and his back is bent over and to the side. He moves his back, but not his head. He groans. He starts playing with his gum. It falls out of his mouth on the seat.
A hand falls on my shoulder.
“Where’s my jacket?” asks Ginger.
“I don’t know,” says Clay.
“Mom, where’s Ginger’s jacket?” I say.
“I don’t know. Clay, where’s Ginger’s jacket?”
“I don’t know,” says Clay. Clay finds it and picks it up. “Here.” He says.
“Who wants it?” says Mom.
“I’m giving it to her!” says Clay.
“Who wants it?” says Mom.
“Ginger!” I say.
Clay throws it on her lap.
Clay asks me if I want to read a wrestling magazine article. I mumble something that I don’t even know what I said.
“Mom, did you throw away this guy?” says Clay. [I think he’s looking at toy magazine, referring to action figures]
“I think so,” says Mom. “I threw away all the ones that were broken.”
“That means you threw away the Joker!” says Clay.
“I don’t know,” says Mom. “I didn’t take roll.”
Ginger laughs.
Dad just put a tape in. I don’t think he liked the radio. There is a lady singing. I haven’t ever heard it. Now some people are singing about 5,250,6500 bizillion 423,000 minutes. Ginger is singing along.
Clay is talking to himself. He is looking at “Apocalips.” He has blue hair, silver skin, a red and black suit, and black hip boots.
Ginger just squeezed my arm. Then Clay started tickling me. Then Ginger stuck her toes up the back of Clay’s seat and he squealed. Then Dad said “Don’t start that.”
Now we are listening to Phantom of the Opera. It is 1:33. Ginger is singing along again.
Dad turned down the volume.
Ginger is pulling on my seatbelt and trying to choke me.
Now we are listening to “Think of Me.” I bet Ginger will start singing to it. Yep, there she goes.
--------------------
5/28/99
[Ginger was not in the car with us on this trip, for... whatever reason. I think Clay and I are still 15 and 10.]
We are on our way from Natural Bridge Caverns to Waco for Shane’s graduation. It is 2:27.
“Some nice houses over here,” says Dad pointing left.
Mom replies, “Nice one over here.”
Now she is looking at a map. It is 2:29.
“The part in the caves I liked most was the man carrying a baby. Every time she dropped the pacifier on the ground he’d pick it up and stick it in her mouth. About the 2nd time he did it I’d about croak,” says Mom.
Clay says, “Who? What? Who did that? What are you talking about?”
Mom fills him in.
“Ewww!”
[At this point, Dad has realized what I’m doing and decides to try and make himself look good.]
“Valerie is so wonderful and talented, isn’t she?” Dad says. “Gee Clay, I’m so proud of you.” He turns to Mom. “You sure look pretty today.”
Clay says to me, “Are you writing about our trip in the cave?”
I shake my head.
“Oh, you’re writing what we say!”
I nod.
“Oh wait, you’re not going to put that in, are you?”
“No,” I say.
He is trying to read over my shoulder.
“You’re unfair!” he says.
I smile.
“Mom, can I see Kleenex?” Clay says.
She holds up a tissue for him to see. “Do you want it?”
“Yes,” he says. “Can I have it?”
Mom hands it to him. He sticks it in his mouth. He shows the Kleenex to me. It is bright red. Nasty.
“When will we be there?” Clay asks.
“In time for dinner,” Dad answers.
Clay clunks his head on the back of his chair and covers his head with a pillow. I do not feel sorry for him. I hope he damaged his head.

What Goes Around...
Valerie: Okay, question one! Have you ever starred as Anne Shirley in a high school production of "Anne of Green Gables?"
Ginger: Heck yes. But the true story is that, through auditions, I was cast as Diana Berry. And then six weeks before the show, Anne did something that was...not good. So that's when I got the role.
Interesting... Now, have you ever tried to kick a tree over and ended up stabbing yourself in the leg with a piece of projectile wood?
That is a true statement, yes. And for a while later the doctors thought I still had wood in my leg!
What goes around comes around. Who do YOU have a crush on right now?
Obama. (pause) No, we'll say.... Well we can just go with my standard answer... that would be Kenneth Branagh.
What movie is Kenneth the hottest in?
HAMLET! Uh... Mourning clothes? HOT.
Interesting. So, tell me about your feelings regarding inside cats and dogs.
Umm... Well for me personally, there's a reason that when God made animals, he didn't build buildings and put them inside of them. And I know a lot of people reading this have indoor cats and dogs, and that's fine. I just don't want them living inside my house. The animals, that is.
Agreed on all counts. What's the best movie you've seen in theaters this year so far?
(Very long pause) Can we go back to '08 and pick Slumdog? Umm.... Sunshine Cleaners?
Oops, I accidentally typed "Sinshine."
Well, that actually sounds about right.
What's the worst?
"Confessions of a Shopaholic." I'm sad to even say I saw that movie. Who gave that script a green light? They should (shakes head)...not have a job.
What are your top 3 or 5 all-time favorite tv shows?
(Without missing a beat) Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman. Lost. The Office. Alias. Gosh, I don't know... Veronica Mars... or My Boys?
It doesn't have to be exactly five.
Okay then, Veronica Mars and My Boys. Growing up it was Saved by the Bell and Full House.
Great segueway into my next question! Have you ever participated in a Saved By the Bell trivia contest?
Uhh... yes, and won second place! But that was back in the day when people didn't really utilize the internet, and I went online to the trivia pages and read up on a lot of info about the show. Some people would call that cheating, but... I would go with what Zach Morris would say, which is... freeze time and it makes it all okay. Remember when Slater's pet lizard dies? (At this time Ginger proceeds to sing word for word the song Jessie Spano sang at the lizard's funeral) "...In that big chameleon banquet in the sky!"
Wow. Okay... Have you ever gone on a local morning show to quite literally cry like a baby?
Uh, yes. It was called... "How cool are you?" Or something like that. It was on a 6:00 am news show. Local news, with Stormy the Weather Dog. They had people on to do stupid human tricks, but they must not have been very talented because I made the finals. But I totally got gypped in the finals, because I got beat by a woman that could shoot a lay up behind her back! That's not a stupid human trick. That's like a...skill!
Okay, this is a two part question...Would you consider yourself a good speller? (When I get to the word 'consider' she breaks out in "Consider Yourself" from Oliver.)
Anyways. Umm, I'm much better than I used to be. I can now spell cabin, anniversary, business, and Saturday, which was not the case 15 years ago.
Well then the second part of that question, is have you ever won a spelling bee?
Well, no, because I was technically runner-up.... Oh! Hold on! Someone's at my door. I'm going to have to let you go!
Oh! Uhh... okay!
Okay! (hangs up)

Tagged for Seven
1. I'm not typically a fan of fantasy or science fiction. At least, so I've thought. Witches, elves, vampires, they never really interested me. And I saw myself for a long time as staunchly separated from anything having to do with any of those things. "I'm not one of those people." And even as I began to enjoy certain sci-fi/fantasy (sci-fantasy?) shows, movies, and books, I qualified each of them as an exception to the rule. But recently I've begun to realize something. My favorite movie? Is "Lord of the Rings." Favorite books? "Harry Potter." Musical? "Wicked." Favorite TV drama? "Lost." Most recent book series read? "Twilight." Wait-- when did this happen? Y'all. I am totally geeking out! And you know what? I couldn't be more okay with that.
2. I'm currently reading Lana Turner's autobiography. It's a really
exciting book, and I always love hearing the inside Hollywood story. However, I think prefer the self-deprecating tone of Debbie Reynolds or the unassuming and humble approach of Henry Fonda in their autobiographies. Lana was fabulous, yes, and most assuredly a screen icon. However, she certainly won't let you forget it! Hardly a page goes by that she doesn't mention how many men desired her, how valuable she was to MGM, how glamorous her nights on the town were, or how dramatic her entire life was. Ginger Rogers was the same way in her book: not necessarily conceited, but she never let you forget how popular she was or how influential her dancing has been. Some of it may be fawning by the ghostwriter, and I don't doubt it's all (or mostly) true, but seriously...give it a rest!3. My new favorite game is Word Twist. I absolutely love it! You're given six letters and you try to make as many words as you can out of it. Very simple, and very addicting. I like to play right before bed, and the other night I woke up thinking "If you can make the word shelf then you can also make the words self and elf...." Cool, Val. Anyway, the best part is-- you get to play your friends! The competition is pretty fierce between Julie, Dani and I. Sometimes the clock is ticking toward zero and I haven't gotten the six letter word yet but Julie and Dani both have why can't I think of it and NOOOOO! Time's up. Widely. The word is widely. GAH!
4. "Legally Blonde: The Musical" is so. Much. Fun. I never thought I'd be here recommending it, but I just love it! It really is a quality show, and the songs are so sing-alongable. It's hilarious, the music is great, and I can't WAIT to see it on tour! Check out my favorite song from the show, "So Much Better:"
Love it! If you're interested in checking out more, my other favorite songs are "Chip On My Shoulder," "What You Want," and of course, the show opener, "Omigod You Guys!"
5. I keep a small squishy soccer ball (see what I did there, alliteration?) on my desk at work. It's fun to squeeze while I'm making phone calls or toss to people who walk through the door. Yesterday one of the part-timers and I went out into the long hallway to see how hard we could throw it at each other. What does my boss think of these crazy shenanigans? Well, the other week he led us in a longest putt competition in that same hallway, so I'd say he's okay with a little craziness every once in a while. And yes, we totally do real work at my office. Why do you ask?
6. When I was in sixth grade and Ginger was in eighth, we were in a wonderfully cheesy school play called "Thanks is Something You Give." The show involved a group of kids that raise money to give to a poor family, until OH NO! Someone STOLE the money. My character blames Ginger and turns the group against her, and she cries. Angels come down from heaven to help us (I'm not making this up) and in the end the real thief confesses. Who was it? Why it was me all along, of course!
7. One time several months ago my cousin Shannon and I went shopping at Target. She was looking for some new work-out clothes and found several items to try on. I sat in the dressing room opposite her so that as she modeled different outfits I could give her my opinion. After three or four different looks, she opened the door wearing a shirt that I instantly vetoed. "Oh, no," I said emphatically, shaking my head. "Definitely not." Seriously, I did everything short of sticking my finger down my throat and rolling my eyes. She just stood there staring at me, her smile widening. "What?" I asked, obliviously. Finally, it dawned on me just as she answered: "This is my shirt." Yeah, as in the shirt she came in wearing. Wow. Foot in mouth much, Val?*
*In my defense, though, it was a 3/4-length black shirt that looked like it would be very uncomfortable to exercise in! It was a nice shirt, not a workout shirt! See? I just had her best interests at heart. Love you, Shanni!

Kid Sister
A few anecdotes for you about a few of my experiences as a "kid sister"....
- The day I was brought home from the hospital for the first time, my mother left me unattended and within reach of my 2 1/2 year-old sister, Ginger. When Mom re-entered the room, she found my doting older sister attempting to open my eyelids with pencils. Had she been successful, I might be writing my half of this blog on some sort of special braille-style keyboard due to the gouging of my eyeballs at a very early age. Admittedly, though, Ginger was probably expecting something a little more like this:
(Scarily enough, that actually looks a bit like the two of us at that age.)
- One of our favorite pasttimes was to construct elaborate houses for our Barbies. Not a Malibu Dream House, exactly-- more just creative furniture (jewelry boxes as coffee tables, etc.) and a second story that was on top of a chair. Always thinking ahead (read: conniving), Ginger would often slyly suggest that I build my house in this special area of our shared bedroom over here, see? Look how much room you have! And you can put the chair right here....yeah! Perfect! I wasn't thinking much ahead, usually, so I most likely didn't notice that my house did not have prime real estate by the end of the day. Because what I may have failed to mention is that my poor Barbie's house would inevitably end up in front of our bed-- our trundle bed. So come 8:30, Mom is having us clean up the Barbie mess, or at least the stuff in the way of sliding the extra bed out into the room. With Ginger's house safely in a corner, my poor handkerchief Barbie beds and rolled-up-socks couches were swept aside to make room for the trundle. This happened fairly often, so you'd think I would have figured out what was going on. But no, I was too swept up in my architectural blueprints and plans for the next grand Barbie mansion that I would again and again fail to build my house on solid ground.

- I remember a Saturday night when my parents were out that found my sister and I watching one of our very favorite shows, Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman. Something happened to one of Colleen's friends in that episode, but I didn't understand what they were talking about.
Val: What does "rape" mean?
And like a true wise older sister, she had just the right answer....
Ginger: Go look it up in the dictionary.
So I did just that. I pulled the heavy dictionary off of the bookshelf and flipped to the entry. After reading it, I returned to the couch, wide-eyed and silent, marginally scarred for the rest of my life by that dictionary.
Kid sister! Kid sister! I'm gonna tell you everything I know! Kid sister and me....
