You haven't seen WHAT?

At small group this week we were asked the following question:

What's a movie that you've never seen that you "should have seen"?

Meaning- when you mention having not seen a classic or even cult classic film, what causes other people to yell in dismay... "YOU'VE NEVER SEEN....?"

I'm still thinking about my answer. Prior to marriage my list was a lot longer. That's what living with a guy will do for you. Thank you dear for my viewings of Doc Hollywood, The Usual Suspects, Rainman, What About Bob, The Passion of the Christ, Ferris Bueller's Day Off (I had never seen it from start to finish), Once... and I'm sure there are many others that I'm just not remembering at the moment.

I know personal aesthetic and choices come into play with the movies we watch, but I decided to pull up some lists on-line and see if there were any other movies I should add to my "dismay" list. I hunted Collection of the best movies from the 80s, Top Cult Classics, and Movies you should have seen lists and came up with the following...

Duck Soup (According to the Gilmore Girls)
The Thin Man (This in is only here because of my sister. I WILL see this one for sure!)
Basically any Sci-Fi movie from the 70's, 80's and 90's... 2001: A Space Odyssey, Aliens, Terminator, etc.
Lawrence of Arabia
I'm pretty sure I haven't seen all 3 of the original Star Wars. (Maybe not the one with the wookies? I know that statement alone took some one's breath away.)
Blade Runner
Easy Rider
Pretty much any horror movie from any time period. (I don't really plan on pursuing these with much energy. "What Lies Beneath" kept me up for weeks.)
Jaws (any of them)
Pulp Fiction (Not gonna happen. Least favorite things in film: gratuitous blood and repeated use of the "F" word.)
Psycho
A Streetcar Named Desire
Labyrinth (Not in a hurry. Sorry, David Bowie.)
Beetlejuice
Ghostbusters

So - what's on your top 10 list that would make you lament if you heard someone else hadn't seen it?

What haven't you seen that gets everyone else all in a tizzy? (In our small group we heard: The Godfather, The Sound of Music, It's a Wonderful Life, Aliens, and plenty of others.)

And finally, what haven't you seen on my top ten list? (I would really like an opportunity to be more dramatic)

My list:
1. Waiting for Guffman
2. Chariots of Fire
3. The Family Stone

4. Pride & Prejudice

5. Love Actually

6. Amelie

7. Chocolat
8. The Last of the Mohicans

9. Meet Me in St. Louis

10. Galaxy Quest

Alright - comment away. Judgement awaits. ;)

Confession: I've never seen more than probably a minute of "Chariots," and even less of "Mohicans." (DUCKING NOW!)

I too have never seen "Pulp Fiction," "Alien," "Easy Rider," or "Streetcar."

I've ALSO never seen "Saving Private Ryan," "Schindler's List," "The English Patient," "Gladiator," or "Silence of the Lambs." Yeah.

"The Thin Man" is so delightfully charming! Please do check that one out. :) And "Duck Soup" is super clever. Their jokes absolutely come a mile a minute!

The movie from my top 5 list of favorites that most people have never seen is "Almost Famous." I love it, so of course I think everyone should see it! :)

From your list: "Guffman", "Chariots" (surprisingly), and "Meet Me in St. Louis".

There are lots of classic horror films I've never seen and don't intend to see: ie. "Psycho" & "Silence of the Lambs".

In between semesters I spend an inordinate number of hours catching up on movies, including lots of foreign film. Now, there are a ton of weird foreign films, but there are also lots and lots of good ones. Here's an easy-going one to start you off:

Les Choristes (The Chorus)
"The new teacher at a severely administered boys' boarding school works to positively effect the students' lives through music" (IMBD).

Enjoy!

Youre still on speaking terms with someone who hasn't seen The Sound of Music?! (I kid, of course)

I've seen most of your list, but the one I was gawked at for until 2 years ago was The Goonies.

And don't bother with Lawrence if Arabia. Seriously.

@Valerie: the next time you're here- Chariots of Fire is ON.

I've never seen "The English Patient." Elaine didn't even like it. (Not your mom, the other one.)

@reneamac: CHARIOTS. Get it. NOW. The rest I will let pass. You would so enjoy Chariots.

I have never seen "Les Choristes" and am totally intrigued!

@Lauren: I finally understood why all of my "So long, Farewell" jokes weren't getting a laugh in this circle.

AHEM. The little bear-like creatures in "The Return of the Jedi" are EWOKS. Chewbacca (Han Solo's right-hand, er, beast) is a WOOKIE.

If you're going to insult us, at least get it right. ;)

And, I admit it, Star Wars is high on my gasp-list. Followed closely by Rocky, LOTR, anything based on a Tom Clancy novel, and at least half of the movies that Val has never seen.

@dc - You should have seen Val flip out on g-chat about the wookies... ;)

Val: "The one with the wookies”
DID YOU REALLY SAY THAT?!?!?
me: :)
who will freak out most?
Val: lol do you mean EWOKS??
me: lol
LOL
Val: good grief.
me: oh man
Val: YOU HAVE TO LEAVE IT
me: i'm going to get stoned
pine cove flub
what is a wookie?
Val: geez
me: i was thinking of my friend wookies and cream
and for some reason
Val: Chewbacca is a wookie
you know who Chewy is, right??
me: YES
:)
lol
Val: sigh....
me: just can't stop laughing now
