At the Moment

It's a bit ironic that the biggest gaps in our posting schedule tend to occur when Ginger and I are, in fact, together. Not entirely surprising, though, seeing as how those times also tend to coincide with, like... actual trips and vacations. Ginger and David are gone now, though so my life is back to being Ginger and David-less. Lame.

In other news, I am now the proud owner of the newly released season 5 dvd of "Friday Night Lights." Returning to Dillon is like coming home.

I am finally getting over an allergy-related illness, slash implosion of the sinuses and throat and OMG I AM SO TIRED OF KLEENEX AND THROAT SPRAYS AND LOZENGES WHY DOES IT FEEL LIKE THERE ARE EXPLOSIONS GOING OFF IN MY NOSE ALL DAY GO AWAAAAAAAAAAAY. Please?

But yes, it finally looks like I am out of the allergy-ridden woods. Double hallelujah, with some extra pollen obliteration on the side.

Want to know what I am doing this Saturday? Here's a hint: the high for the day is 92 degrees, and my pool is full of water. GUESSES?

Totally on the agenda as well: a long-overdue oil change. (Hi, Dad!)

[Sidenote: Did that last phrase make anyone else think of "A Goofy Movie?" If so, then: you are my new favorite person.]

Anyway. YOU GUYS. Blog giveaways? They totally work! Dreams do come true! You really can win things just by leaving comments! For instance, Ginger once won a hair clippy thing, and last week I won a Jesus Storybook Bible! Yes, on a BLOG GIVEAWAY! All this to say, Ginger has a giveaway going on over at her official, adult-like blog. She's giving away two (2) (dos) copies of a really cool book called "From Head to Foot: All of You Living All For Him." So: go forth and enter. And spread the word! You only have until tomorrow evening to enter!!!!!11!1one

Uh oh.

I think I spoke to soon. Now I am sucking on a throat lozenge (High five to Halls Fruit Breezers for seeing me through the Sinus Implosion of '11, as well as a delirious study night I once spent with Julie freshman year. Couldn't do it without y'all.) and am sniffling again. Alright then. Off to rally the troops (aka Benadryl, ibuprofen, and more FLING FLANGING KLEENEX) and hopefully conquer the allergy beast soon. Wish me luck.

Valentine Preview

Today I'm guest blogging over at Wide Open Spaces. Jordan issued the challenge and I determined to give it my girl scout best. Follow the link to discover my list of my Top Ten Date Ideas.

(Sarcasm may or may not be included.)

And while you're there, check out some of Jordan's thoughtful writing. We are kindred Texas spirits who have both discovered how to love the desert.

Happy Reading, Happy Loving.

Small world.

How crazy is this internet thing? About every month or so I pull up my Facebook account only to have yet another elementary school classmate asking to be my friend. This week I had a girl who I could have sworn disliked me ask to be my friend. We are now connecting over Facebook messages and I've come to discover that the third party information I received and believed for almost 15 years was WAY OFF BASE. I love how God is always at work in bringing truth to light. :)

So Facebook connects us, but this blog world has done a little bit of introducing on it's own. A few years ago my sister demanded I read the hilarious blog of one Annie P. I found myself chuckling at her musings and videos. I offered a mixer up to our blog readers and she readily agreed to take it off my hands. From there it's been terribly enjoyable becoming friends with someone you've never met. Annie told me recently that she's looking forward to meeting David... and also me.

Through Annie I started following the blog of a guy living in the midwest who was writing a really interesting series on dating. I kept noticing another girl from Arizona who would also comment on his blog. Turns out Jordan and I were BOTH from Texas and living as aliens in this strange desert. We actually met up for lunch and a movie a year ago and since then we have both met and become engaged to fellas from the Valley. I followed her year of planning and looked at the photos of her beautiful wedding before deciding I needed all of the advice she could give me. Her sweet mother has been giving my mom TONS of good info.
David and I went to Starbucks last Saturday morning and he pulled out a HUGE box that had been mailed to me from Jordan. Wedding goodness galore! Thank you Jordan!!

Of course, I can't fail to mention that I met my terribly wonderful soon-to-be-husband (114 DAYS!) on this crazy thing. So I may waste a few hours on the old Mac - but I'd say the web has been pretty good for my relationships.

Good case of the Mondays.

25 days until the folks fly in for the big show. Whoop! How has that word snuck into my vocabulary? Too many Aggies in my life. :)

Y'all, this local theatre experience has been a trip. I'd always wanted to audition, but couldn't seem to bring myself to try in East Texas. I figured Phoenix would give me a better pool to draw from. And while this is no "Midnight at the Oasis", sometimes I just need to go home and bite my pillow to keep from giggling.

It's good. Real good.

Also good, a day off. I wish I had it in me to just lounge about all day long in my pajamas. And now I realize that it is noon and I am still sitting in my pajamas with a box of corn flakes beside me on the coffee table. I'm planning on making some coffee and reading for a while before going to the gym. (Currently reading through books that I have on my shelf but have somehow never managed to read. In the third chapter of "Praying God's Word" by Beth Moore.) I have dance rehearsal tonight, but that's really the only thing on tap. I should be practicing Act 1 of the show, as it is 79 pages long and I have lines on a fair few... but I just need a small break. A small one.

Not sure why you care to know about all of this, but I'm really just typing anything that comes to my mind at this point. I reread my posts over the last 6 months and gathered that they are almost all lists. But I figure that since I don't have a child to document on my blog, that this really should be ok. I'm wondering - should I be reading any blogs that you follow? My friend Megan just recommended this blog by Katie and so far it looks to be amazing. What are your 5 go-to blogs to read? My google reader still has plenty of room. Perhaps if I broaden my reading, my writing will improve as well.

Oh, one last thing... if you didn't know by now, I'm an NPR junkie. It's on in my car most of the time. Here's a fun quiz about their radio personalities. Good luck.

12:36 PM Valerie: "cause living is good...and dying...not as good"
12:38 PM Ginger: :) here's what just happened in my brain: "Is that a quote from Camelot? From my scripts for Kidfest? What is that? That's a song. Did Tom Hanks say it on Conan? WHAT IS THAT FROM?"
then I typed it out so...Jerry Seinfeld right? Stand up comedy? I could hear a male voice singing haven't looked it up yet

Blog Friends: Greatest Hits

What’s interesting about blogging is the way you put yourself out there, spend time and energy on a post, and sit back and wait for someone to acknowledge that effort. Is this just me? I mean, surely we all want people to read what we’ve written, even if it’s just a top ten list or a random rehash of what happened in your day. And months, or years out…what then? Who is going to remember what you wrote on an average Wednesday two years ago? Well, tonight I set out to acknowledge YOU. Okay, some of you.

I’ve assembled a list of a few of my favorite bloggers, and then compiled a list of my most favoritest blogs of theirs. This was no easy task, as some of these names could easily have had seven or 12 or 46 separate entries listed beneath them that could all be considered favorites of mine. For brevity’s sake, and also for the sake of this is how I decided to do it, I’ve selected three blogs for each person. These are the missives that stuck in my mind, made me laugh, or made me star them in Google Reader because WOW THAT IS SOME GOOD BLOGGIN RIGHT THERE.

Please click the lovely links below—don’t they look so enticing? If you’ve been looking to break in to some new blogs, start here. I’ve done the initial scoping out work for you! And if you already read some of these blogs, but didn't start until recently so you've missed a few of these entries? Oh honey. Do yourself a favor and go back and read the ones I've highlighted below.

So seriously. I know you're busy, and it takes time to click on all these different links, but really. Everyone should read all of these blogs. You won’t regret it.

Massive hat tip to the below writers! You are all amazing, and it was like cutting off fingers to name only three favorites for each of you. Or like picking a favorite child. Both of those, really. Cutting off your child's fingers. Wait, what?

Without further adieu! The list:

Joey

Lost Spinoff
Class: A Running Commentary
Your Hand in Mine

Annie

K is for Kaleidoscope
Underwires: Overrated

Julie

Dani

Does this count...

...as my weekend if I work both Saturday and Sunday?

Memorial Day weekend is upon us and once again I've managed to not have to attend any graduations.  I love being supportive, I would just rather be able to sit next to the person and not have air horns blaring all around.  And once again I am also not in Galveston with the entire extended family.

So, what am I doing?  So kind of you to ask.

1.  Watching the season premiere of Glee on Hulu.  I've started it and am already deliriously addicted to this little show.  Can't wait for the full season in the fall.
2.  Borrowed a computer monitor to finally pull all of the documents off of my CPU from college.  Who knows what choice delights await my searching?  I have a feeling it could be a gold mine of sorts.  The original monitor died in 2005 and I haven't had the time or energy to remedy the situation.
3.  Running OUTSIDE this evening.  Why would this possibly make my list?  Monday the high was 107 degrees.  There had been already 6 consecutive days in the 100's.  Today is cloudy with a high of 75.  Glorious.
4.  Working, but I love what I do AND there will be over 200 helium balloons in my room this weekend.  The temptation to teach with a helium voice may prove to be too strong even for my best intentions.  Apologies now for any voicemails left in a slightly higher register.
5.  Meeting a Texan from the blogosphere!  Talk about 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon.  Val sent me to Annie's blog years ago, Annie mentioned Andy, and Jordan commented on Andy's blog.  As soon as I discovered this transplanted Aggie I started following her on google reader.  Long story short - we are meeting up on Memorial Day.  I think our moms had been suggesting this for a while.  They should both be so pleased with us.
6.  And finally for my next trick... I'm off on Tuesday.  Monday is my usual weekend, so the holiday pushes my weekend to Tuesday.  What to do?  (Deep breath.)  I know exactly what to do.  Somehow I called a local theatre and am auditioning for their 2009-2010 season.  This is another one of those get out of the car moments.

Happy Weekending!

April 25, 2009

I’m going to shamelessly use my post this week to promote an event that is near and dear to my heart. Almost two years ago I found my way to the INVISIBLE CHILDREN website and have been following this organization ever since.

In the spring of 2003, three young filmmakers traveled to Africa in search of a story. What started out as a film making adventure transformed into much more when these boys from Southern California discovered a tragedy that disgusted and inspired them, a tragedy where children are both the weapons and the victims.

After returning to the States, they created the documentary "Invisible Children: Rough Cut," a film that exposes the tragic realities of northern Uganda’s night commuters and child soldiers. The film was originally shown to friends and family, but has now been seen by millions of people. The overwhelming response has been, "How can I help?" To answer this question, the non-profit Invisible Children, Inc. was created, giving compassionate individuals an effective way to respond to the situation.

Here’s the latest from the Invisible Children blog:

"Our new film, ‘The Rescue: of Joseph Kony’s Child Soldiers’ is now streaming on our brand new website! This powerful new piece of media profiles rebel leader Joseph Kony and the untold story of child soldiers under his reign. It speaks of the urgency to end the war and rescue the child soldiers.

Check it out, and sign up to receive updates, and start spreading the word about The Rescue Event on April 25th. Since the website’s launch a few days ago, over 5000 people have already signed up for The Rescue. When you sign up, you choose the city you will be at on April 25th, and you’ll receive updates about your specific city. With over 100 cities worldwide hosting the Event, you’ll be sure to find a city in your area.

When you click the ’sign up’ button on the main page, you’ll be directed to the three ways you can take action. You can buy the Gray Rescue Bracelet DVD, the two Rescue tshirts, and sign up for TRI to help fund the event.

We’re really excited about The Rescue, but we need your help. We’ve got 60 days to make history, so watch the film and sign up today."

So take a minute or two and visit the site, sign up for updates, and partner with a generation as we come together in cities across the world on April 25th to raise awareness and hopefully end this war.

Paper Jams and Green Beans

I’m sitting in a training meeting. I feel as if this guy is speaking in a different language while discussing quantum physics. He’s been brought in to talk about the new fancy copier/scanner that can do just about anything. He has an audience of 12 of us and I was apparently the only one shocked that this meeting would require more than 10 minutes of time. I started out listening and even followed him on clearing paper jams…but now I am obviously not learning about paper weight restrictions. That’s the last three words he said and I’m now tuning this out again. I probably look like the best student in the room. I’m the only one who looks to be taking detailed notes. I nod my head from time to time and look up. I think I’m very good at looking like I’m paying attention.

I wonder, should I feel guilty for my behavior? I don’t think so. I’ve used the copier a total of 10 times in the last year and a half. I don’t copy the bulletins or coloring sheets.

I’ve decided to let go of guilt. Granted, some guilt is healthy and brings repentance…but then again some guilt is self-imposed. Therefore, I will not feel guilty for the following:

-Not exercising every day. I’m so over this. I will not become a sloth sitting on my couch, but I will not feel personal pain over working and then going to class and then coming home and crashing. OVER IT.

-Counting down the minutes left to go in my college Spanish class. 1 hour 23 minutes and 12 seconds left in this class. 1 hour 22 minutes and 58 seconds left in this class. 1 hour 22 minutes and 39 seconds left in this class.

-Not eating the frozen banana flavored waffles that have been sitting in my freezer since November. They were purchased by a guest who has to eat gluten free food…that doesn’t me I have to.

-Staying on the couch for 3 straight hours after arriving home from work on Sundays.

-Throwing everything away. I don’t save tickets, playbills, dried flowers.

-Not throwing away every letter or card ever written to me that has more than “Happy Birthday” written on the inside.

-Having a Diet Coke…whenever I feel like it, and none of my family members in the dental field will be able to convince me otherwise.

-Not liking green beans. The End.

-Lack of knowledge regarding memorabilia. I don’t know the name of the coach, the player, the team, the lead singer, the actor, the character name, the location. Don’t know and doing just fine.

-Over capitalizing words. Sometimes I just Enjoy Emphasizing things for GOOD measure.

-Having writer’s block. It’s real and ugly and rears its head as soon as I have any sort of a creative deadline.

-Wearing clothes forever. You can nominate me for “What Not to Wear.” I don’t care.

-Indulging myself in blog entries. Who really wants to read lists...and yet...

Looting and Polluting is Not the Way

You know what's scary? The idea that, at any time, you can see what other people are searching for on the internet. And they can see what you're searching for. Yeah. Freaky.

However, I have now decided that this is more fun than scary. Because have you looked at what people are searching for lately?

What's interesting is that a large number of people seem to be searching for an actual web address. So instead of searching "Oprah Winfrey New Earth book" or something, several people seem to be searching www.oprah.com/newearth. I don't understand that. Don't you already have the address? So what are you searching for?? Someone did search for "oprah.com anewearth, though, so in that case... well, I guess they need all the help they can get!

Another popular search seems to be "leprechaun trap." I just don't have an answer or a reason for that one....

"Odd girl out." Tell me about it.

"Secret life of a soccer mom." If I didn't already know that was a new reality show, that search would be a whole heck of a lot more entertaining.

"US soldier throws puppy off cliff" is a popular search. Ginger, if we started writing about dead puppies, we might be able to increase traffic on our blog! You up first?

One of the searches was for "Sam Aiken." Sadly enough, my first thought really was: "So is that Clay Aiken's dad?" (Answer: No. It is not.)
.
"mlb 2k8 review." This is like a foreign language to me.

"Earth Liberation Front." Thought this sounded way cool, like some sort of real life Captain Planet organization! (Earth! Wind! Fire! Water! Heart!) But then I realized this was the group that torched like 5 houses today, so...yeah. Not quite as philanthropic as Captain Planet, then.
*Edit* Shortly after posting this entry, someone found this blog by searching "www.oprah.com/newearth." Hmm... Maybe this should be our strategy to reach new readers: just string together all the common phrases that are most often searched. Or, better yet-- just mention Oprah, and I'm sure we'll be golden!

The Trail That Led Them Here

One of the smartest things we ever did in creating this blog was to install a counter that collects information about who visits the site and how they get here. I find endless entertainment in reading what people searched for that led them to Saltwater Coke. Here are a few of my favorite keywords:

fisher and pickle magna doodle (Huh?)
little drummer boy orphan annie (How do these go together?)
why some people are always single (This one is depressing.)
side ponytail 90s (No. Not okay.)
turkey a la key recipe (Do they mean 'a la king?')
sara troll (Is this... someone's name?)
ginger for canker sores (Ginger, do you heal people's canker sores?)
small bathroom in closet (Huh?)
high school awful (Why would you search for this?)
jenna fischer horse scene (Not sure I even want to know)
coming up with names for wow (Actually i think "wow" is a very good name already)
what does little orphan annie look like today (Why would someone need to know this?)
stacy london overalls (I don't think Stacy London would appreciate being associated with overalls. At all)
how do you spell kaki? (The pants khaki, or my cousin Kaki?)
skim milk vs 2% expiration (No idea how they found our blog with this one)
she reminds me the accident (Again, how is this associated with us?)
apple head doll caveman (I just....what?)
Here's to hoping that people continue to Google odd/weird/trippy phrases, and most importantly, that they continue to be directed to our little blog.
